Report: Pro Bowl CB Vontae Davis has free agent visit with Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills are in a position where they might need to address some needs in the secondary for the second-straight year, despite the unit’s success in 2017.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that might be addressed with Pro Bowl cornerback Vontae Davis, as Schefter reported that Davis met with the Bills on Thursday.
Davis was named to the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2015 as a member of the Indianapolis Colts. Davis was originally drafted in the first round (25th overall) by the Miami Dolphins in 2009.
The reason why the Bills would be interested in Davis is because of a series of free agents Buffalo have at the cornerback position with free agency approaching on March 14.
The biggest of the bunch is starter EJ Gaines, who the Bills acquired in a trade in August, along with a 2018 second-round pick in a deal with the Los Angeles Rams. The Bills sent wide receiver Sammy Watkins the other way with a 2018 sixth-round pick.
Gaines, 25, played in 11 games for the Bills with nine passes defended and one interception. He added 59 tackles.
Along with Gaines, Shareece Wright and Leonard Johnson are unrestricted free agents while Lafayette Pitts is an exclusive rights free agent.
Last season, Davis was riddled by injuries. Davis had surgery on a groin injury and was eventually released by the Colts in November. Schefter reported last week that the defender also had surgery on an injury in his core, which he was cleared from. In addition to injury, Davis also had an off-field saga of sorts with the Colts in 2017.
Leading up to Indy’s Nov. 5 game against at the Houston Texans, Davis was a healthy scratch and the team did not take him to the game. Davis expressed his displeasure the following week and said his groin issue had still been hampering him.
Colts’ GM Chris Ballard also went on the record that week stating he didn’t believe Davis had any setbacks. The saga ended with Davis’ release.
The Bills are the first team Davis has met with since his release. The 6-foot defensive back will be 30 at the start of the 2018 season. Spotrac lists Gaines’ value in free agency at $9.3 million per season. Buffalo would likely land Davis for less.
