Report: Bills interested in top-tier QB in upcoming draft after shelving idea in 17′
Since the 2017 NFL draft when the Buffalo Bills gained an extra first-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, the stars have aligned for the organization to trade up for a quarterback.
One report says that quarterback could potentially be UCLA’s Josh Rosen.
According to Optimum Scouting, some in the Bills brass were big fans of now Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky prior to last season’s draft, but the Bears traded up to the second-overall pick to take him, well before Buffalo’s initial pick at 10.
Buffalo then eventually traded back to 27 with the Kansas City Chiefs, instead of taking another quarterback like KC did with Patrick Mahomes.
In 2018, Rosen is their man, per Eric Galko of Optimum Scouting.
“Josh Rosen to the Bills is what I’ve heard repeatedly,” Galko said.
In regard to Trubisky, Galko continues on Trubisky, saying that even Trubisky himself thought he’d be a Bill.
“[The Bills] were higher on Trubisky than we were (in 2017), but Trubisky looks pretty good. I think it was a good decision to be aggressive towards him. I know people close to Trubisky who said that, ‘Yeah, he believed he was likely going to be a Buffalo Bill of all the teams out there.’ You know a lot of teams liked Trubisky, obviously the Bears did too, but he thought himself that the Bills might be his most likely destination,” Galko said.
But, around the 2017 NFL draft is when the changes came to the Bills. Prior to the draft, head coach Sean McDermott came to town. Ex-GM Doug Whaley wanted Trubisky, but McDermott killed the idea and Whaley was fired soon after the draft.
“McDermott believed in Tyrod Taylor,” Galko said.
But per Galko, that has changed, and Galko believes that Rosen is their man.
“I think [the Bills] feel they’re a quarterback away from being a consistent playoff team and getting back there,” Galko said.
If the Bills were to draft Rosen, they’d have to trade up very high to do so, likely to the second-overall pick. That New York Giants currently hold the second pick.
Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane and current Giants GM Dave Gettlemen both spent time together in Carolina.
