Report: Bills tab John Butler as new secondary coach

Updated — 6:31 p.m.: The Bills have made Butler signing official, announcing that he’s their new defense backs coach.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — One day after the Buffalo Bills announced that Bill Teerlinck would replace Mike Waufle as Buffalo’s defensive line coach, John Butler will reportedly replace Gill Byrd as defensive back coach.

According to Alex Marvez of Sporting News, the Bills tabbed Butler as Byrd’s replacement. While Waufle retired, Byrd was dismissed by the team per the Buffalo News despite a strong season from all four starters in the team’s secondary.

Safety Micah Hyde made the Pro Bowl while safety Jordan Poyer was viewed as a snub. Rookie corner Tre’Davious White earned Rookie of the Year honors by Pro Football Focus while cornerback EJ Gaines is in line for a big pay day as an unrestricted free agent.

Butler spent the previous four seasons as the Houston Texans’ defensive backs coach. Butler and McDermott attended La Salle College High School together in Glenside, Pa.
