Watch it again: Tre White seals the deal, picks off Alex Smith to ice 16-10 win for Bills (video)
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The headlines were already writing themselves before Tre’Davious White decided to flip the script and keep his team in the playoff hunt.
With two minutes on the clock and no timeouts, things were going the Kansas City’s (6-5) way as the Chiefs offense was driving down 16-10. Buffalo (6-5) cornerback EJ Gaines had a phantom unnecessary roughness call go against the Bills and KC was in Buffalo territory.
That all came to a screeching halt as the Bills’ rookie first-rounder intercepted Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith on third-and-eight with 1:25 remaining.
White jumped a comeback route intended for Tyreek Hill down the right side line. White returned the ball 63 yards just short of the goal line.
White credited preparation, as the rookie said he recognized the route.
“Play recognition,” White said. “We’ve been watching film on play formations all week. It was like three or four times I saw them run that formation but (Smith) didn’t throw it, but I knew in crunch time, (Hill) was his guy.”
But the real cherry on top is the back story.
Buffalo, holders of the tenth-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, traded back to pick No. 27 where it selected White. Who was that team? The Kansas City Chiefs.
Oh, not to mention, Buffalo received KC’s first-round pick in 2018 in that deal. That means White also helped the Bills improve that pick’s value.
